After Marrakech it was time to explore the south of Morocco. Because we only stayed for a week, we didn’t have the time to go to the more popular desert destinations like Merzouga, so we went to Zagora. It’s a city at the foot of the Sahara and it’s a 7 hour drive away from Marrakech. We booked tickets with CMT – you can only book tickets by going to the bus station, ask a taxi to bring you there since it’s outside the city – and off we went to the desert.
The bus ride was beautiful – see the picture on the left – but since you’re driving through the mountains, it was also sickening. I had to really focus on the road and sit still otherwise things would go bad real soon. Eventually after 7 hours we arrived in beautiful Zagora. The heat slapped you in the face but the scenery made it all worth it.
We stayed at Riad Dar Sofian, which was a very pleasant hotel. There weren’t a lot of other guests so the pool was our territory :) I would just say it wasn’t as fancy as it seems on the website, but still pretty fancy. The dinner was pretty bad but the breakfast was amazing.
In the hotel we could also book excursions and we chose to do camel ride into the desert. We left at 8am and the scenery was beautiful but it took us 3 hours to get to the camp. We had our night booked at the hotel so we didn’t stay there overnight – which is what most people do – we got lunch at the camp and afterwards we headed back to the hotel. The problem was that by that time it was 1pm so the hottest time of the day and it would take 3 hours as well of course. After 30 minutes I started to feel really dizzy and a few moments later I was lying on the ground. So yes I would recommend it but be smarter than I was and be prepared. Survival tip: don’t drink your water after it has been in the sun for 3 hours..
After three days we made our way back. Instead of taking a bus we got a taxi. The people from the hotel kindly helped us and arranged one for us. Instead of going back to Marrakech immediately we did a one night stop in Aït-Ben-Haddou. I read online that it’s the perfect roadtrip stop. Driving through the mountains was way more relaxed now and everthing went smoothly.
Our stay was very cosy and lovely. We booked two rooms at Paradise of Silence and the serenity there was amazing. Again there weren’t a lot of other guests so we could just chill, chill and chill.
The view was incredible and we could even catch a small glance of the Kasbah. We visited it in the evening and then had some pizza on a rooftop.
We then made our way back to Marrakech airport and got on our plane back home. This was truly an amazing adventure and I’m so happy I got to experience it with my friends. Can’t wait for the next ones..
